Latest Cover for LA Weekly
Photographed a portrait of Tyree Dabney for the latest cover of LA Weekly.
The story is about redemption in California's parole system and the Anti-Recidivism Coalition, it is written by Jason McGahan.
Just found out yesterday that the LA Weekly was sold to some unknown entity. No official word was given about the paper's future yet. Hopefully this won't be my final cover and contribution to such an amazing publication.
It's been a long mighty run so far.

LA Weekly Cover
An image I photographed of a street vender is featured on the cover of LA Weekly.
The story is about how street vending is not legal in Los Angeles, one of the largest cities in the world that does not allow street vending.
All that may change with new city regulations and licensing laws in the works.
In the meantime, street vendors like the Guatemalan woman in the photo, will continued to be ticketed, harassed, and have their possessions confiscated by law enforcement.

Beverly Hills by the Sea
The residents of Venice and Oakwood back in 1993 during the first wave of gentrification.
Now the area is called "Beverly Hills by the Sea" and is quickly becoming the most expensive place to live in the LA County. Read about it in this week's LA Weekly.

The Two Mayors
Was reflecting on the very different experiences of photographing two mayors of Compton for the LA Weekly.
The first cover shoot was of Mayor Omar Bradley back in May of 2001. Set up a photo shoot for inside the Mayor's office at Compton City Hall. He didn't say much to me, just sat down at his desk and crossed his hands in front of him. Seated inside the office were several ministers and friends of the mayor. They were chanting some terse religious verses from the bible, mostly from revelations I think, through out the shoot. Shot about 2 rolls of 120 film, 24 images, and took off. When I processed the film, there was one shot that stood out and it was picked for the cover. The image became very controversial, because it looked as if the Compton city seal had made a set of horns on the mayor's head.
12 years fast forward. I was assigned by the LA Weekly once again to cover the newest mayor of Compton, Aja Brown. We met at a fancy new Starbucks in Compton. We all, Mayor Aja Brown the writer Patrick Range McDonald and myself, sat outside in the afternoon sun under a huge umbrella and sipped coffee drinks. I photographed her between questions from Patrick, and the cover image was picked from that shoot. The umbrella cast a perfect light on Mayor Brown, and the open look of the background was perfect.
Will be interesting to see what is in store for the city of Compton under Mayor Brown's leadership.

Landed the shot of a cracked Hollywood Walk of Fame star on this week's LA Weekly cover.
Shot the image with my iPhone5 using the Hipsatmatic app.
The story was written by Patrick Range McDonald and is about the gentrification of Hollywood, and the population shift and exodus of Latinos to affluent whites.

"Grim Sleeper" Missed by a Hair in 1988
Here is a L.A. Weekly story illustrating how close, and yet so far away the L.A.P.D. was to capturing the "Grim Sleeper" serial murder suspect Lonnie Franklin Jr. in 1998. The story is written by L.A. Weekly investigative reporter Christine Pelesik.

Kulak's Woodshed Controversy
My photos from Kulak's Woodshed, a tiny folk music venue in the Valley, and their neighbor Charles Peyton where published in this week's LA Weekly.
They are locked in a bitter feud over noise and hours of operation of Kulak's Woodshed.
Charles Peyton, formally known as Jeff Styrker of porn movie fame, is suing Kulak's Woodshed owner, Paul Kulak, for four million dollars.
The feud has been going on since 1999 when Kulak's Woodshed opened.
